10,000 hours.... or my legacy
I had no idea penguins really do surf not just the cartoon ones in surfs up. This week I thought of riding the wave. In teaching and playing I allow others to experience the great cosmic wave that created the universe, the wave that interconnects all that we know, and don't yet know. The wave of positive energy that is beginning to encircle the world through the work of sound and energy practitioners.
In the case of the penguins mastery takes time, patience, perseverance, failure and then one day they are riding their waves all by themselves. Malcolm Gladwell calculated that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. I take great pride in hearing stories from my students who have gone from 'what is it?', to owning and then playing for others. Last night Wing Yan shared she had played in public for her first performance at a book store in Yuen Long. The immense satisfaction and pride on her face said it all.
Likewise around HK we have Bertha in Tseung Kwan O, Teresa in Tuen Mun, Kwai Chung, and Kwun Tong, Cheryl, Malbert and Lulu in Central, Sheung Wan and Causeway Bay. Kristy travels to Bali and Japan while Mel goes from strength to strength in Bangkok, Steph in Hua Hin, Cryst in the Cameroon Highlands, the gong cat team in Singapore, Jonny in the USA and Manale in Poland. All share a desire to uplift and transform by bringing the power of the gong to the people in their communities.
The studio was built on a dream fuelled with a passion. As we move closer to our 5th anniversary I reflect on the circuitous route thus far. The guiding light is knowing the world needs gongs and that my mission is to spread the technology across cultures and within demographics from CEOs and boardrooms to old age homes and care givers, ecstatic dancers, underground bars and music festivals to cancer survivors, schools, shopping malls, beaches and conferences. My belief of giving an experience of peace, to totally relax or simply have a good nap is as strong as ever. For I believe only from a place of neutrality can we respond not react to life's challenges.
